I recently viewed this interview with Naomi Watts on YouTube, and was genuinely frightened by the events of the past few years that she was pointing out. Many of these events show up as examples on this list I have had posted in my office for some time now, called “Early Warning Signs of Fascism“, written by a college Professor named Laurence W. Britt.
EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF FASCISM:
-Powerful and continuing nationalism
-Disdain for human rights
-Identification of enemies as a unifying cause
-Supremacy of the military
-Controlled mass media
-Obsession with national security
-Religion and government intertwined
-Corporate power protected
-Labor power suppressed
-Disdain for intellectuals and the arts
-Obsession with crime and punishment
-Rampant cronyism and corruption
So, I followed up on some of the statements that Ms. Watts made in the interview.
I loved the part of the clip where you see this guy riding on top of some fancy new off the lot Suburban tricked out with a big black Blackwater decal on it. He looks like some idiot guido ricer kid, except that he’s drinking a Smirnoff Ice, AND slinging what looks like an M16, and wearing a flak jacket in the French Quarter. I know we’ve all been to Mardi Gras, and it can get surreal at times, but this was FOR REAL.
Former CEO Dick Cheney’s former alma mater Halliburton, and its subsidiary KBR, got a $365 million contract two years ago to build detention camps across the United States. The KBR press release at the time stated: “the contract, which is effective immediately, provides for establishing temporary detention and processing capabilities to augment existing ICE Detention and Removal Operations (DRO) Program facilities in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs“.
Blah Blah Blah? Wait, can you back that up a moment, what sort of new government program would require the support of a system of many, many, detention camps that would EACH hold as many as 5,000 people? $365 million seems like a lot of prison camps if they all look like Guantanamo Bay. That seems like an inexpensive prison model really – a lot of chain link fence and a lot of shackles.
Did you know that torture is now legal in the United States? Read this report by Amnesty International.
Here is an article from the United Kingdom talking about the similarities to dictators of the past and the Bush administration. Read about the Princeton Constitutional scholar that is on the no fly list – BANNED FROM FLYING. “Anti-war marcher? Potential terrorist. Support the constitution? Potential terrorist. History shows that the categories of “enemy of the people” tend to expand ever deeper into civil life.”
I agree with Ms. Watts, we need to say something, to stand up for our rights. Vote for people who won’t give all of our money to their friends companies. Our public schools are failing, except where our rich kids live. Health care is a joke. And we are running out of money AND credit to pay for it all. Did you know that Hugo Chavez is urging Latin countries to pull money out of U.S. banks?
Ask yourself this question. Are you REALLY better off than you were 5 years ago, 10 years ago? You may have more stuff, a bigger house, but are you really better off? We now have secret prisons, homeland torture, and nobody is paying attention.
Do you think the ordinary German in 1935 realized they were doing these things at the time, or did they figure it out later, after the shit hit the fan?
